Created by someone who understands

Maddy Firth knows what it feels like to be left wondering ‘what now?’

After her own experiences of PCOS and high-risk pregnancy led her to explore surrogacy, she discovered how hard it could be to find and connect with others on a similar path.

Maddy believed there had to be a better way, and founded Rainbow to help make that possible.

Your questions answered

Why would I join Rainbow instead of using a traditional surrogacy organisation?

The Rainbow app offers a different way to explore surrogacy and donation. Instead of relying on introductions made on your behalf, you can create a profile, discover compatible potential matches with intended parents, and choose who you'd like to connect with through secure connection requests. Rainbow doesn't replace surrogacy organisations, fertility clinics or independent professional advice. Instead, it brings together matching, community, resources and access to experienced professionals in one place, giving you more choice and control over how you move forward.

Do I need to be ready to become a surrogate or donor before joining Rainbow?

Not at all. You don't need to have made any decisions before joining Rainbow. Whether you're simply curious, researching your options or hoping to hear from people with first-hand surrogacy or donation experience, Rainbow gives you access to community discussions, helpful resources and potential connections, allowing you to explore at your own pace.

Can I join Rainbow just to ask questions or hear other people's experiences?

Absolutely. Many people join Rainbow to ask questions, read community discussions and learn from others before deciding whether surrogacy or donation is right for them. There is no expectation to look for intended parent matches if that's not the path you choose.

Can I use Rainbow if I've already been a surrogate or donor?

Yes, Rainbow welcomes former surrogates and donors who would like to share their experiences, offer support and help others who are just beginning to explore surrogacy or donation. Your insight can make a truly meaningful difference to someone else's path.

How does Rainbow matching work?

Rainbow uses AI-powered matching technology to identify compatible potential intended parent connections based on your preferences, goals and compatibility. Matching is entirely optional, and you decide whether or not you'd like to be included. If you choose to create a profile, you'll instantly see any compatible intended parent matches already on Rainbow and receive notifications as new matches join. If an intended parent would like to connect, they'll send a secure connection request with a short introduction, and you can decide whether to accept before starting a private conversation.

Can I speak directly with intended parents?

Yes, if you choose to explore potential matches and both parties would like to connect, Rainbow allows you to start secure private conversations through the app, giving you the opportunity to get to know each other at your own pace.

What happens after I match with an intended parent?

Once you've matched with a compatible intended parent, there are a couple of ways to take the next step. If an intended parent would like to connect, they'll send you a secure connection request with a short introduction, which you can choose whether to accept. Alternatively, if you find an intended parent you'd like to get to know, you can send them a secure connection request yourself. Once a request has been accepted, you can continue your conversation through Rainbow's private messaging, taking the time to build trust, ask questions and decide together whether you'd like to continue getting to know each other. If and when you both feel ready, matches may choose to meet in person to build upon the relationship further, before deciding what comes next.

What happens if we decide we'd like to move forward together?

Once you've taken the time to get to know each other and both feel ready to move forward, the next step is usually to choose a suitable fertility clinic together. Depending on your circumstances, you may also wish to seek independent legal advice and other specialist support. While Rainbow doesn't manage the medical or legal stages of your journey, the app offers helpful resources and a directory of verified professionals with experience in surrogacy and donation, making it easier to find the information and expertise you need when the time is right.

What is a surrogate?

A surrogate is someone who carries and gives birth to a baby for another person or couple, known as the intended parent or parents. There are different types of surrogacy, and Rainbow provides trusted information and guidance to help you understand how surrogacy works and what may be involved before deciding whether it's something you'd like to explore.

Why are surrogates often called 'volunteers' in the UK?

In the UK, surrogates are often referred to as volunteers because the law does not allow commercial surrogacy. This means a surrogate cannot be paid for carrying a baby, although intended parents can usually reimburse reasonable pregnancy-related expenses. The term reflects the fact that surrogates choose to help someone else build their family, rather than providing a paid service. Many people simply use the term surrogate, while organisations and legal guidance may refer to surrogate volunteers.

What is an egg, sperm or embryo donor?

An egg, sperm or embryo donor is someone who donates their own eggs, sperm or embryos to help another person or couple build their family. Rainbow brings together trusted guidance, community support and opportunities to learn more, helping you understand the different types of donation before deciding whether you'd like to explore them further.

Is my information private?

Yes, Rainbow is designed around privacy and choice, so you decide what information you share, who you connect with and how your conversations develop, with secure messaging and privacy controls built into the app.

What information do I need to share when I join Rainbow?

You're always in control of how much information you choose to share. To create your profile, you'll be asked for some basic information about yourself, your preferences and what you're looking for. Depending on whether you're joining as an intended parent, surrogate or donor, you may also be asked to provide additional information to help Rainbow identify compatible potential matches. For egg and sperm donation, this can include details such as physical characteristics and medical history. You can update your profile over time and manage what information you share through your privacy settings.

Does Rainbow charge surrogates and donors to use the app?

Rainbow is free for surrogates and donors to join and use, with no monthly fees or expectations.
